Abstract

A column by M. Amien Rais on the lively campaign for the 1997 general election, when PPP was spontaneously flooded with young people while Golkar appeared less enthusiastic and PDI slumped after Soerjadi took over Megawati's leadership. Amien reads this phenomenon as a strong message from young people demanding change and rejecting a status quo corroded by corruption and collusion, contempt for law enforcement, and social inequality. He warns that the government after the 1998 General Session of the MPR (SU-MPR) would be in danger if it were not wise enough to catch that signal and open the "floodgates" for aspirations towards a more democratic life.
