Abstract
A column by M. Amien Rais on the Bre-X fake gold discovery scandal at Busang, East Kalimantan, which tarnished Indonesia's name internationally. Amien recalls his criticism, voiced since early 1997, that exploration at Busang should be halted, and then sets out three principles that Bre-X violated, namely integrity, transparency, and posterity, as well as the share allocation that gave the government only 10 percent. He argues that the scandal is also Indonesia's scandal because domestic hands smoothed the way, and he proposes three steps: that the Minister of Mines and Energy, I.B. Soedjana, resign; that Bre-X's activities be cancelled and legally investigated; and that investor confidence be restored through transparent management of the mine.
