Abstract

Ahmad Syafii Maarif discusses B.J. Habibie's idea of the "two Ms", a modern and moderate Islam, which was put forward at the Sidang Tanwir (Tanwir Session) of Muhammadiyah in late 1996. The mastery of science and technology is read as a strategy for freeing the Muslim world from dependence, while moderation is linked to the doctrine of umma wasath (the middle community). The author closes with a call for Islam to present itself democratically and to reject feudalism and neo-feudalism.
