The Metamorphosis of the Thought of Young NU Intellectuals: A View from an NU Outsider

Abstract

This article discusses the role of the young generation of NU (Nahdlatul Ulama) in Indonesian Islamic thought in the 2000s. The author identifies seven factors shaping the genealogy of their thought, including the pesantren, NGO work, scholarly networks from Egypt, the IAIN, radical and leftist contemporary Islamic thought, and the figure of Gus Dur as the protector of their liberal ideas.
