John Kiriakou: From “Muslim Hunter” to CIA Whistleblower: Inside the Anatomy of CIA Covert Operations

Abstract

What happens when a CIA officer who once helped hunt America’s enemies becomes one of the Agency’s most outspoken public critics? John Kiriakou: From “Muslim Hunter” to CIA Whistleblower takes readers inside the hidden world of American intelligence through the extraordinary career of a former CIA analyst and operations officer. From counterterrorism operations in Greece and Pakistan to the 2002 capture of Abu Zubaydah, Kiriakou stood close to some of the defining events of the post-9/11 intelligence era. Five years later, he entered another history when he publicly confirmed that the CIA had used waterboarding and described the practice as torture. What followed was investigation, prosecution, federal prison—and an unexpected transformation into one of the most visible former intelligence officers speaking publicly about the CIA. Drawing on court records, congressional investigations, government documents, memoirs, journalism, and nearly two decades of recorded interviews, Kamaruzzaman Bustamam Ahmad reconstructs Kiriakou’s story while examining the machinery behind it: intelligence recruitment, human-source operations, liaison relationships, targeting, interrogation, secrecy, covert action, and institutional accountability. But this is not simply a biography. It is also an investigation of the intelligence witness himself. What did Kiriakou actually see? What was he told inside the Agency? Which claims can be independently documented? And what happens when memory, secrecy, institutional narrative, and history collide? John Kiriakou offers a rare anatomy of CIA covert operations—and of the complicated men and institutions operating behind the secrecy of the War on Terror.
