Abstract
This article traces the history of religious imagination and contestation in the Nusantara (Malay-Indonesian archipelago) through networks of ulama, the development of institutions, and the circulation of kitab (religious texts) from the Middle East. Aceh is read as the first site of Islamisation, with evidence from the Kingdom of Peureulak, the role of the ulama of Pasai, and the dayah. The author also portrays Muslim contestation in the contemporary political landscape.
