Abstract
Who shaped the idea of the Asian Century—and how much of that vision was shaped by Singapore itself? Few Asian thinkers have challenged Western assumptions about global power as persistently as Kishore Mahbubani. Born into a poor Sindhi family in colonial Singapore, he rose to become a distinguished diplomat, a prominent voice at the United Nations, and one of the most influential advocates of Asia’s resurgence. But what lies behind his argument that the twenty-first century belongs increasingly to Asia? In Kishore Mahbubani: Singapore’s Diplomat-Philosopher and the Case for an Asian Century, Kamaruzzaman Bustamam Ahmad offers an independent intellectual biography and critical examination of Mahbubani’s political thought. Moving from Mahbubani’s formative years and Singapore’s multiracial founding to the great debates over Asian values, the rise of China, American power, and global governance, the book reconstructs the experiences and institutions that shaped his worldview. At the heart of this study are five questions: How did Singapore transform a diplomat into a globally influential public intellectual? What does the rise of Asia mean for the future of Western power? Can the United States and China navigate their rivalry without undermining the international order? Why have ASEAN and multilateral institutions become central to Mahbubani’s vision? What is missing from his account of Asian civilization, particularly regarding Islam and the Muslim world? Drawing on Mahbubani’s major writings, diplomatic career, public interventions, and the arguments of his critics, Ahmad provides a rigorous assessment that is neither an uncritical celebration nor a dismissal. More than a biography, this is a study of ideas, power, and the making of an Asian worldview. Written for readers interested in geopolitics, international relations, Singapore, Asian political thought, and the changing world order, Kishore Mahbubani invites a deeper examination of one of the most consequential arguments of our time.
