The Separation Between State and Religion in Islam?

Millah: Journal of Religious Studies · Vol. II No. 2, Januari 2003 · 2003-01

Abstract

This article re-examines the idea of the separation of state and religion in Islam, taking the thought of Ira M. Lapidus as its starting point. The author concludes that there is no source of data, whether normative or historical, that supports the separation of religion and state in Islam; the idea of secularisation exists only in the West, as taught in the Bible. Written while the author was pursuing his master's degree at the University of Malaya.
