Nilai-Nilai Pendidikan Islam dalam Adat Gayo [Islamic Educational Values in Gayo Customary Law]
2013
Abstract
A book by Drs. H. Mahmud Ibrahim, MA, a cultural figure and adat (customary) leader of the Gayo, examining the values of Islamic education contained in the adat of the Gayo people of the highlands of Central Aceh and Bener Meriah. The author shows that Gayo adat, as summed up in customary expressions and proverbs, the kinship system, the etiquette of social interaction, and life-cycle ceremonies from birth and marriage to death, does not stand apart from the teachings of Islam, but serves as a vehicle for education in morals, social responsibility, and religious devotion. The principles of togetherness, a sense of shame, self-respect, and respect for parents and customary leaders are read as forms of the internalization of Islamic values in everyday life. The book is important for the study of the relationship between Islam and adat in Aceh, the anthropology of education, and the preservation of Gayo local wisdom. Its cover displays the kerawang Gayo motif, the distinctive ornamental pattern of the Gayo people.
