Abstract
An official compilation of two Selangor state laws published by International Law Book Services (ILBS) in the Laws of Malaysia series, updated to 30 November 1997. The first part contains the Administration of Islamic Law Enactment 1989, which governs the institutions for the administration of Islamic law in Selangor: the Majlis Agama Islam Selangor (Selangor Islamic Religious Council), the office of the mufti and fatwa, the establishment and jurisdiction of the Mahkamah Syariah (Sharia Court), the management of the baitulmal (public treasury), zakat and waqf, mosques, and provisions on converts (mualaf). The second part contains the Islamic Family Law Enactment 1984, which governs marriage, the conditions and registration of marriage, polygamy, divorce (talak, khulu', fasakh, taklik), maintenance (nafkah), hadanah (child custody), harta sepencarian (jointly acquired matrimonial property), and penal sanctions relating to violations of family law. This document is important as a primary source for the study of Islamic family law and sharia courts in Malaysia, particularly for comparative studies with the application of Islamic sharia in Aceh and Indonesia.
