Islam dan Negara: Transformasi Gagasan dan Praktik Politik Islam di Indonesia (Edisi Baru dan Diperluas) [Islam and the State: The Transformation of Islamic Political Ideas and Practices in Indonesia (New and Expanded Edition)]
Paramadina, Jakarta · 2009
Abstract
A new and expanded edition of the classic work by Bahtiar Effendy (1958–2019), a political scientist at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, which originated in his dissertation at Ohio State University. The book explains why the relationship between Islam and the state in Indonesia since independence has been marked by tension and mutual suspicion, particularly in the debates over the basis of the state, the Jakarta Charter (Piagam Jakarta), and the political marginalization of Islam during the Old Order and the New Order. Bahtiar shows that from the 1970s a new generation of Muslim intellectuals and activists, such as Nurcholish Madjid, Abdurrahman Wahid, and others, transformed Islamic political ideas from ideological formalism towards a substantive and integrative approach: accepting Pancasila and advancing Islamic values through cultural, bureaucratic, and civil-society channels. This transformation gave rise to a more accommodative relationship between Islam and the state. This expanded edition adds a discussion of the development of Islamic politics in the Reformasi era. The book is a principal reference for the study of Islamic politics in Indonesia.
