Abstract
A work by Deliar Noer (1926–2008), a political scientist and historian of the Indonesian Islamic movement, on the management of Islamic religious affairs by the state from the colonial period to the New Order. This new edition, published for the Yayasan Risalah, traces the roots of Dutch policy through the Kantoor voor Inlandsche Zaken (Office for Native Affairs) and the institution of the penghulu, then the birth of the Ministry of Religious Affairs in 1946 and the development of its structure and functions: the administration of the hajj, religious education and madrasahs, the religious courts, marriage, zakat, wakaf, and religious information. Deliar analyses how the political compromise between the Islamic and nationalist camps shaped the religious bureaucracy in Indonesia, while highlighting the problems of efficiency, autonomy, and politicization of these institutions. The book has become a classic reference for the study of the relationship between Islam and the state and of the history of religious administration in Indonesia.
