Abstract

A transliterated edition of the work of Teungku Chik Kuta Karang, a nineteenth-century Acehnese scholar and fighter, by Mohd. Kalam Daud and T.A. Sakti. This Malay-Jawi kitab is a medical treatise that combines the ancient Greek medical tradition (the humoral theory of Hippocrates and Galen), transmitted through Muslim scholars such as Ibn Sina, with the knowledge of medicines and healing practices of Acehnese society. Its contents cover theories of the causes of disease, diagnosis, remedies from plants and natural materials, and prayers and wisdom (hikmah) in healing. This transliteration from Jawi script into Latin script opens access to the intellectual heritage of the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam in the field of medicine, and is important for the study of philology, the history of science in the Malay world, and Acehnese ethnomedicine. Its cover shows an Arabic manuscript-style miniature of the compounding of medicines.
