Abstract

An issue of the Islamic magazine Sabili (motto: Meniti Jalan Menuju Mardhotillah, "Treading the Path towards God's Good Pleasure") commemorating the centenary of the birth of Buya Hamka (1908–1981). The cover story "Merindukan Ulama Pejuang" (Longing for Fighting Ulama) remembers Hamka as an ulama, man of letters, author of the Qur'anic commentary Tafsir Al-Azhar, and first General Chairman of the MUI (Indonesian Council of Ulama) who stood firm towards those in power, while also reflecting on the community's need for a similar ulama figure. This issue also contains the report "PKS Menuai Kontroversi" (PKS Reaps Controversy) on the National Working Meeting of the Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (Prosperous Justice Party) in Bali, coverage of the NU anniversary (Harlah NU) with the call "Kikis Habis Paham SEPILIS" (Eradicate the Ideas of SEPILIS: secularism, pluralism, liberalism), and the piece "Hitam Putih Soeharto" (The Black and White of Soeharto) weighing the legacy of the former president who died in January 2008. The issue records the discourse of political and religious Islam in Indonesia in early 2008.
