Abstract
A collection of papers from the workshop "Comparative Study of Southeast Asian Kitabs" held at Sophia University, Tokyo, on 23 October 2011, edited by Sugahara Yumi and published as SIAS Working Paper Series no. 14 by the Institute of Asian Cultures – Center for Islamic Studies, Sophia University, under the Islamic Area Studies Program of NIHU (National Institutes for the Humanities), Japan. Japanese and Southeast Asian researchers compare religious kitab (texts) in Arabic, Malay-Jawi, and regional languages studied in the pesantren, pondok, and dayah of Indonesia, Malaysia, Southern Thailand, and the Philippines: the history of their writing and printing, the printing networks in Mecca, Cairo, Singapore, and Patani, curricula and methods of teaching, and the role of the kitab in shaping the authority of the ulama and Islamic identity in Southeast Asia. The volume reflects the strong tradition of Islamic area studies in Japan and is a reference for the study of kitab kuning (classical Islamic texts) and the intellectual history of Southeast Asian Muslims.
