Abstract

A book by Ibrahim Mahmood published by Pustaka Antara, Kuala Lumpur, whose cover bears the title Sejarah Perjuangan UMNO (The History of UMNO's Struggle), while its title page reads Sejarah Perjuangan Bangsa Melayu: Suatu Penyingkapan Kembali Sejarah Perjuangan Bangsa Melayu menuju Kemerdekaan. The book traces the awakening of Malay political consciousness from the British colonial period: the role of the press, teachers, and religious groups; the emergence of state-level Malay associations; the massive opposition to the Malayan Union proposal in 1946, which gave birth to the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) under Dato' Onn Jaafar; through to the independence negotiations under Tunku Abdul Rahman, the formation of the Alliance (Perikatan) with the MCA and MIC, and the proclamation of the independence of the Federation of Malaya on 31 August (Ogos) 1957. The book has become a popular reference on the history of Malay nationalism and the role of UMNO from a Malay point of view.
