Abstract
An opinion article by Lies Marcoes in the daily Kompas on young women who join radical groups such as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Negara Islam di Irak dan Suriah, NIIS). Starting from the cases of teenagers and families from Indonesia and the United Kingdom who left for Syria, the author rejects simplistic explanations of women who are merely infatuated. She proposes two levels of analysis: global socio-political inequality, which makes a sharia state an ideological answer, and the structure of patriarchy, which places women in a low position. Within radical groups, women actually feel they gain recognition, whether through "soft jihad" as wives and mothers or through technological skills and combat roles. This longing for recognition and equal standing is, according to the author, a strong motivation for women's involvement in radical movements.
