Abstract

A biography of Habib Muda Seunagan, also known as Abu Peuleukung, a charismatic ulama from Seunagan, Nagan Raya, Aceh, by Sehat Ihsan Shadiqin, Mukhlisuddin Ilyas, and Ardiansyah. The book places its subject within the long history of the socio-political role of the ulama of Aceh: he lived through the period of the Dutch colonial war, forced labour under the Japanese occupation, the independence revolution, post-independence conflicts, and on to the policies of the Old Order and the New Order. The subtitle "Republiken Sejati dari Aceh" (A True Republican from Aceh) underlines his loyalty to the Republic of Indonesia, including his message to his followers not to rebel against the legitimate government. Besides the political side, the book also presents him as an ulama of a Sufi order (tarekat) who answered the religious questions of the community.
