Abstract

A book by General (Ret.) H. Djoko Santoso, former Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (Panglima TNI), setting out his ideas on Indonesia's future direction based on his experience as a soldier. According to reports of its launch in February 2014, the book consists of two parts. The part "Asa dan Rasa Kebangsaan" (Hope and the Sense of Nationhood) discusses the foundations and pillars of nationhood, the threat of globalization to nationalism, the importance of pluralism and education, national self-reliance in the economic, political, and cultural fields, and anti-corruption as a symbol of a new nationalism. The part "Sosok Kepemimpinan Nasional Masa Depan" (The Figure of Future National Leadership) formulates the criteria for a leader: willing to listen, honest, capable, courageous, efficient, and transformative. The book appeared ahead of the 2014 General Election, when its author was mentioned as a prospective presidential candidate.
