Abstract
A classic work by the Israeli political scientist Shlomo Avineri (1933–2023) on the social and political thought of Karl Marx, first published in 1968 in the series Cambridge Studies in the History and Theory of Politics. Avineri reads Marx primarily as heir to and critic of Hegel's political philosophy, not merely as an economist or a prophet of revolution. He traces Marx's ideas on the state, civil society, alienation, property, the proletarian class, and revolution, and stresses the importance of the young Marx's writings for understanding his mature works. The book is also known for rejecting deterministic and authoritarian interpretations of Marx, and for showing the tension between Marx's thought and the political practice later carried out in his name. To this day the book remains a standard reference in the study of the history of political thought and social theory.
