Foreign Affairs — Do Nuclear Weapons Matter? (November/December 2018)
Council on Foreign Relations, New York · Vol. 97, No. 6, November/Desember 2018; sampul · 2018-11
Abstract
The November/December 2018 issue questions the significance of nuclear weapons in an era of great-power competition. The main package features John Mueller, who argues that nuclear hysteria is more dangerous than the weapons themselves; Nina Tannenwald on the fading of the nuclear taboo; Elbridge Colby on strategy for facing the new rivalry; Scott D. Sagan on nuclear-armed dictators; Caitlin Talmadge on the risks of escalation in a US–China war; and Olga Oliker on the function of Russia's arsenal. The additional cover line refers to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's essay on the Trump administration's strategy towards Iran. Other essays discuss the role of America's allies in maintaining world order, the lessons of the 2008 crisis, globalisation, a possible new wave of Arab uprisings, the collapse of Venezuela, and the abuse of American financial power.
