Abstract
The March/April 2019 issue discusses the rise of nationalism in various parts of the world. The "The New Nationalism" package brings together Jill Lepore on the need for a "new Americanism", Kwame Anthony Appiah on cosmopolitanism, Andreas Wimmer on why nationalism works, Jan-Werner Müller on the false nationalism of populists, Robert Sapolsky on the biological basis of the "us versus them" tendency, Yael Tamir on a better nationalism, Jack Snyder on the broken bargain between nationalism and the liberal order, and Lars-Erik Cederman on ethnonationalist conflict. The additional cover line refers to the debate between Francis Fukuyama and his critics on identity politics. Other essays discuss a conservative liberal order, budget deficits, and the fate of authoritarian leaders.
