Foreign Affairs — The Self-Doubting Superpower (January/February 2024)

Council on Foreign Relations, New York · Vol. 103, No. 1, Januari/Februari 2024; sampul · 2024-01

Abstract

The January/February 2024 issue was published a few months after the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023. Fareed Zakaria's cover essay, "The Self-Doubting Superpower", argues that America must not abandon the world order it built. The section "The Middle East at War" features Maria Fantappie and Vali Nasr on the war that is transforming the region, Amos Yadlin and Udi Evental on the failure of Israeli intelligence, and Audrey Kurth Cronin on Hamas's asymmetric advantage. Other essays discuss the weakening of American statecraft, conservative internationalism, the sources of deterrence in Taiwan, the threat of major war, Africa's democratic crisis, and how to protect the global economy from China.
