Abstract
This encyclopaedia by the IAIN Ar-Raniry Writing Team presents intellectual biographies of 26 Acehnese ulama of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, from leaders of the Aceh War such as Teungku Chik Pante Kulu to dayah scholars, educational reformers, academics of Islamic law and historians. It opens with two forewords, by Azyumardi Azra on the global network of ulama and by T. H. Ibrahim Alfian on the intellectualism and politics of Acehnese ulama.

- Description
- Ensiklopedi Pemikiran Ulama Aceh (Encyclopaedia of the Thought of Acehnese Ulama) is a reference work compiled by the IAIN Ar-Raniry Writing Team and published by Ar-Raniry Press in Banda Aceh in 2004. It appeared at a critical moment in Aceh's modern history. Peace negotiations between the Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement had not yet found a way forward, the special status of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam was only a few years old, and the legal framework for implementing Islamic law was still being drafted. In that climate a group of young lecturers at the State Institute for Islamic Studies Ar-Raniry chose to work in a field that was often overlooked: mapping the thought of Acehnese scholars who lived between the late nineteenth and the late twentieth centuries. The result is a set of narratives on twenty-six ulama, as T. H. Ibrahim Alfian notes in his foreword, and the Gadjah Mada historian described it as the most complete encyclopaedia of Acehnese ulama thought known to him at the time of publication. The book's first distinction lies in its angle of vision. Much of the earlier literature cast Acehnese ulama as supporting actors in the history of war, or as charismatic figures remembered through their graves and the institutions named after them. This encyclopaedia moves a step further by tracing the ideas, writings and intellectual styles of its subjects, so that the ulama appear as producers of knowledge rather than merely as symbols of identity. The authors' selection spans the scholar-poets and war leaders of the nineteenth century, such as Teungku Chik Pante Kulu and Teungku Chik di Tiro; the twentieth-century dayah scholars who built community-based religious education; the reformers of schooling and organisers of nationalism; and the academics who established the study of Islamic law in Acehnese universities. The opening chapter, by Nur Chalis Sofyan, reads the Hikayat Prang Sabi stanza by stanza through a hermeneutic lens, showing how Teungku Chik Pante Kulu fused early Islamic Arabic poetry, Acehnese historical memory and the everyday language of ordinary people into an energy of resistance. The second distinction lies in the two forewords that frame the volume. Azyumardi Azra, then Rector of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and professor of Islamic history, wrote a foreword entitled "Acehnese Ulama in the Global Network of Ulama and the Renaissance of Islamic Thought in the Archipelago". It places Aceh as the first region of the archipelago where the Haramayn network of scholars took root and gathered momentum, sets out the roles of Nuruddin al-Raniri and Abdurrauf al-Sinkili as links in the reform movement of the seventeenth century, and connects that tradition with the generations of Acehnese ulama of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. T. H. Ibrahim Alfian, professor of history at Universitas Gadjah Mada, wrote the second foreword, entitled "The Intellectualism and Politics of Acehnese Ulama in the Encyclopaedia". It concentrates on the intellectual and political functions of the ulama, reads the Hikayat Prang Sabi as cognitive resistance to colonialism, recalls the roles of Teungku Abdullah Ujong Rimba and Teungku Djakfar Hanafiah in softening the rigidities of Acehnese Islamic thought in the 1970s and 1980s, and invites readers to treat the selection of figures as a politics of discourse that deserves open discussion. The volume's historiographical value is also visible in the profiles of its contributors. In 2004 most of them were young lecturers in the faculties of Sharia, Adab, Tarbiyah and Dakwah at IAIN Ar-Raniry who had recently completed master's degrees at home or abroad, including at Leiden, McGill, the Australian National University, the International Islamic University Malaysia, the University of Malaya, the National University of Malaysia, Al-Azhar, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, IAIN Sunan Kalijaga, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Indonesia and Universitas Padjadjaran. Two decades later many of them had become professors, deans, leaders of Islamic missionary organisations, a grand imam, and researchers whose work is cited throughout Aceh studies. The encyclopaedia therefore also records a generation of Acehnese scholarship at the starting point of its careers, and it can be read as a document in the intellectual history of IAIN Ar-Raniry, which became UIN Ar-Raniry in 2013. For today's readers the book is useful in at least three ways. First, it is an entry point to Acehnese ulama who have rarely been written about systematically in Indonesian. Second, it offers comparative material for newer research, since some of its biographical data can be tested again against archives, manuscripts and recent scholarship. Third, it is evidence that knowledge about Aceh was being produced from within Aceh long before the wave of post-tsunami and post-peace research. The authors did not wait for foreign scholars to define their ulama; they wrote with the language, sensitivity and unease of people living inside a society torn by conflict. The book naturally has the limitations of a collective work of its time. The style varies from chapter to chapter, some chapters are more descriptive than analytical, and several important figures are missing, as Ibrahim Alfian himself acknowledges when he names Teungku Djakfar Hanafiah as a figure not included in the book. Those limitations open an agenda for further work: a revised edition, new entries on women scholars and on ulama from the central highlands and the south-west coast, and fresh readings of Jawi and Acehnese texts that remain untouched. Alfian closes his foreword by urging readers to produce a new or revised encyclopaedia of the ulama if the debate the book opens truly takes place. In the KBA13 Academy Archive and Library this record serves as the parent entry for several text entries that are catalogued separately so that they can be read in full, cited precisely and used as study material. The foreword by Azyumardi Azra, the foreword by T. H. Ibrahim Alfian and the chapter on Teungku Chik Pante Kulu are each available as a text edition transcribed from the printed pages and reset without images, while keeping the original spelling, terminology and endnotes. Transcriptions of further chapters will follow as material becomes available. The contributor data in the section "Sekilas Tentang Penulis" also feeds the figure entries on Acehnologi, the Aceh studies gateway in the same ecosystem, so that readers can move from the book to its authors, from the authors to the figures they wrote about, and from those figures to the scholarly networks around them. The front cover shows a collage of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca and the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh, set beside old manuscripts and images of celestial bodies, a visual allusion to Aceh's ties with the Haramayn and to knowledge as an inheritance that crosses space and time. The IAIN Ar-Raniry emblem appears at the lower left and the names of the two foreword writers at the lower right. The copy in this collection shows signs of use, with cracks in the cover lamination and a small label at the lower left, the marks of a book that has been read often. For citation, the book is usually referred to in the literature as a work of the IAIN Ar-Raniry Writing Team, Ensiklopedi Pemikiran Ulama Aceh, Banda Aceh: Ar-Raniry Press, 2004. Some researchers list one contributor as the main author, although the cover and title page make clear that it is a collective work. Readers citing a particular chapter are advised to name the chapter's author, the chapter title and the pages, and then to refer to the parent volume, since each chapter was written with its own approach and under its author's own scholarly responsibility.
