Abstract
An introduction to moral philosophy by Franz Magnis-Suseno, philosopher and professor at the Driyarkara School of Philosophy, presenting twelve twentieth-century ethical thinkers in Kanisius's Pustaka Filsafat series. Starting from the plurality of worldviews that left ethics without a shared foundational vision, the book ranges from Emmanuel Levinas's fundamental ethics and B.F. Skinner's cultural engineering to A.J. Ayer's view of ethics and Hans Jonas's ethics of ecological responsibility. Each position is explained clearly and assessed critically.

- Description
- 12 Tokoh Etika Abad ke-20 (Twelve Ethical Thinkers of the Twentieth Century) is an introduction to moral philosophy by Franz Magnis-Suseno that presents twelve important twentieth-century ethical thinkers to Indonesian readers. The book was published by Penerbit Kanisius in Yogyakarta in its Pustaka Filsafat (Philosophy Library) series. Library catalogue records give the first printing as 2000, with 271 pages at 21 centimetres and ISBN 979-672-725-0, and an index on pages 268 to 271. The book has been reprinted many times under the same ISBN; the catalogue of Petra Christian University, for example, records a sixth printing in 2006, and another library records a 2004 printing. Franz Magnis-Suseno is one of the most influential philosophers and Catholic clergymen in Indonesia. According to an undergraduate thesis on his thought, he was born on 26 May 1936 in Eckersdorf, Silesia, in eastern Germany near the Polish border, the eldest of six children. He studied philosophy at the Philosophische Hochschule in Pullach near Munich from 1957 to 1960 and came to Indonesia in early 1961 as a member of the Society of Jesus. He studied Javanese language and culture, was ordained a priest in Yogyakarta in 1967, and received a doctorate in philosophy from Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich in 1973 with a dissertation on the thought of the young Karl Marx. In 1969 he co-founded the Driyarkara School of Philosophy in Jakarta, where he later held several posts, including chairman, and became a professor in 1996. He became an Indonesian citizen in 1977 and received an honorary doctorate in theology from the University of Lucerne in 2002. He has also taught as a visiting lecturer at the University of Indonesia, Parahyangan University, the Hochschule für Philosophie in Munich and the University of Innsbruck. Among his widely read works are Etika Jawa (Javanese Ethics) and Etika Politik (Political Ethics). The basic idea of the book is set out in the publisher's description recorded in several catalogues. The twentieth century is portrayed as a time of tension between forces that unify the world through globalisation and the clash of plural religious, moral and ideological worldviews. That plurality is reflected in ethical thought, which lost a shared foundational vision. The book presents twelve thinkers who represent this diversity. The publisher illustrates the range: from the fundamental ethics of Emmanuel Levinas to the cultural engineering of B.F. Skinner, and from A.J. Ayer's view of ethics as a logical mistake to Hans Jonas's ethics aimed at saving humanity from ecological destruction. According to the same description, Magnis-Suseno explains each position clearly and points to places where a critical response is possible. These four names already show how wide a span of thought the book covers. Levinas represents a phenomenology that makes the encounter with the face of the other the ground of ethical responsibility. Skinner represents a behaviourism that sees human behaviour as the product of conditioning and therefore open to engineering. Ayer represents a logical positivism that denies moral statements any cognitive meaning. Jonas represents an ethics of responsibility for the future in the face of modern technological power. By placing such conflicting thinkers in one book, Magnis-Suseno invites readers to see that twentieth-century ethics was not a single school but a wide field of debate. The names of the other eight thinkers are not given here because the book's full table of contents could not be verified from the online sources found. As part of Kanisius's Pustaka Filsafat series, the book is written for students and general readers who want to understand the intellectual struggles behind the dramatic events of the twentieth century. Magnis-Suseno's style is known for being systematic and direct. He typically gives a short account of a thinker's life, sets out the main ideas, and then offers a critical assessment from the standpoint of his own ethics, which is rooted in European philosophy and Catholic thought. This approach lets the book serve two purposes: as an introduction to the history of ideas and as an exercise in critical thinking about the foundations of morality. The book belongs to a long series of works by Magnis-Suseno on ethics. Elsewhere he has written on basic ethics, political ethics and Javanese ethics, while 12 Tokoh Etika Abad ke-20 concentrates on modern thinkers. In Indonesian universities it is often used in courses on ethics and moral philosophy and is cited in undergraduate and graduate theses on ethical thought, including at Islamic universities. An undergraduate thesis at UIN Ar-Raniry on Franz Magnis-Suseno's concept of ethics, for example, cites it as one of its sources. For an Islamic-studies library, the book is useful as an introduction to modern Western moral philosophy, which is often the interlocutor of contemporary Islamic ethical thought. Students of akhlak, Islamic philosophy, maqasid al-shariah or public ethics can use it to learn the main positions in twentieth-century ethics, such as positivism, behaviourism, phenomenology and environmental ethics, before comparing them with the Islamic tradition. The clarity of its explanations and the author's critical stance make it good material for cross-traditional discussion of the foundations of morality. Its relevance for Aceh studies is indirect. The book does not discuss Aceh, but it can provide theoretical grounding for discussing questions of public morality in Aceh, such as the relationship between law, religion and ethics in the implementation of sharia, social responsibility after the conflict and the tsunami, or environmental ethics in the management of natural resources. Hans Jonas's ethics of responsibility, for instance, can be read alongside discussions of environmental damage and disaster in Aceh. The book's limits should also be noted. As an introduction, it gives each thinker limited space, so readers who want to study a particular thinker in depth need to turn to the primary works or specialist studies. The choice of thinkers and the angle of critical assessment also reflect the author's own intellectual background. Even so, the book remains one of the most widely used introductions to modern ethics in Indonesian. This record describes the copy held in the private collection of KBA13 Academy, catalogued from its cover. The cover of this copy carries the Pustaka Filsafat series logo, the Kanisius publisher's logo, the title 12 Tokoh Etika Abad ke-20, the name Franz Magnis-Suseno and several portrait photographs, and it shows heavy wear from use. The cover gives no year or printing number, so the year recorded is that of the first printing, 2000.
