Abstract
A column by Daoed Joesoef (1926–2018), Minister of Education and Culture from 1978 to 1983, marking National Education Day, 2 May 2010. He draws a sharp distinction between education and schooling and argues that Indonesia has no national education system, but rather an "anarchy of schooling". Daoed criticises the separation of culture from education since the era of President Abdurrahman Wahid, as well as the neglect of the principles of equality and fair equity inherited from Ki Hadjar Dewantara, as seen in the International-Standard School (Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional, SBI) project, which he says creates a "caste system". He also weighs the risks of homeschooling, which distances children from Indonesia's diversity, and then calls for a futuristic concept of national education as a legacy for the nation, involving political parties and community organisations.
