Abstract
The third volume of the De Atjehers anthology series, edited by the anthropologist Muhajir Al-Fairusy, which brings together the stories and reflections of more than thirty Acehnese writers, from lecturers, researchers, and postgraduate students to journalists and activists, about their experiences of migrating (merantau), studying, and working in various countries and regions. With the theme "Kopi, Garis Batas & Kebudayaan" (Coffee, Boundaries & Culture), this volume uses coffee and the coffee shop, Aceh's most distinctive social space, as an entry point for discussing cultural encounters, identity, state and cultural boundaries, longing for one's home village, and the ways in which Acehnese people make sense of their Acehneseness and their Islam when they are outside the "Serambi Mekkah" (Verandah of Mecca). The series title, Dari Serambi Mekkah ke Serambi Kopi (From the Verandah of Mecca to the Verandah of Coffee), captures the shift in the image of Aceh from a region of religion and conflict towards an open, cosmopolitan society. This anthology is an important document of the Acehnese intellectual diaspora after the tsunami and after the peace.
