Yusril versus Masyumi: Kritik terhadap Pemikiran Modernisme Islam Yusril Ihza Mahendra [Yusril versus Masyumi: A Critique of Yusril Ihza Mahendra's Islamic Modernist Thought]
Dea Press, Jakarta · 2000
Abstract
A book by Adian Husaini, a Muslim intellectual and dakwah activist who later became known for his studies of Islamic thought and his critique of liberalism, which criticizes the thought of Yusril Ihza Mahendra, Chairman of the Partai Bulan Bintang (Crescent Star Party), who claimed to be the successor of Masyumi. Starting from Yusril's dissertation on modernism and fundamentalism in Islamic politics, a comparison of Masyumi in Indonesia and the Jamaat-i-Islami in Pakistan, the author argues that Yusril's interpretation of the stance of Masyumi and Mohammad Natsir on the basis of the state, Islamic sharia, and the Jakarta Charter tends to drift away from the true ideals of Masyumi's struggle. Published at the beginning of the reform era, when Islamic parties were reviving, the book records the internal debate among the heirs of Masyumi about the relationship between Islam and the state, the meaning of Islamic modernism, and the direction of Islamic politics after the New Order.
