Abstract
An opinion article by Daniel Dhakidae in the daily Kompas ahead of the Congress of the PDI Perjuangan (Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle) in Bali on 9 April 2015. The author compares the congresses of the "old parties" inherited from the New Order: the PPP and Golkar, which ended in splits, while the PDI-P arrived as the winner of the 2014 election without political euphoria. He discusses the tension between President Joko Widodo as a "party functionary" (petugas partai) and the party that nominated him, including the controversy over the nomination of the Chief of the National Police. Borrowing from Niccolò Machiavelli, the author reads power through three elements, fortuna, virtù, and necessità, to assess the position of Megawati Soekarnoputri, who was once again confirmed as party leader, and the position of Jokowi, whom he considers fortunate but lacking strong internal support.
