Abstract
An opinion article by Carunia Mulya Firdausy in the daily Kompas supporting the proposal to raise the national poverty line (garis kemiskinan, GK). The author explains that the absolute poverty line used since the 1970s is top-down and too low, so that many people are not recorded as poor. He discusses the Asian Development Bank's proposal to raise the poverty line from Rp 302,735 to Rp 516,420 per capita per month, as well as the results of LIPI (Indonesian Institute of Sciences) research in 2012 and 2013 using a bottom-up (subjective) approach in Bantul, Palembang, and Gowa, which proposed Rp 500,000 per person and Rp 1,500,000 per household per month. According to the author, the choice of method and the size of the increase depend on the vision and mission of the Joko Widodo–Jusuf Kalla government in freeing society from poverty.
