Abstract
The November/December 2016 issue of Foreign Affairs appeared at the height of the United States presidential election and made the rise of populism its main theme. The package "The Power of Populism" contains an interview with Marine Le Pen, an essay by Fareed Zakaria on the global wave of populism, Michael Kazin on Trump within the tradition of American populism, Cas Mudde on the populist surge in Europe, Shannon K. O'Neil on the Latin American experience, Sheri Berman distinguishing populism from fascism, and Pankaj Mishra on the globalisation of rage. This issue also contains the "final thoughts" of two Obama administration officials, namely an interview with Secretary of State John Kerry and an essay by Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter on the rebalance to the Asia-Pacific, plus pieces by Anne-Marie Slaughter on the networked world and Swati Dhingra on Brexit. This material is important for reading the intellectual atmosphere shortly before the election of Donald Trump.
